U.S. college students earned 1.5 million bachelor’s degrees in the 2005-06 school year, the last year for which data is available.

That’s up 19 percent from 2000-01. The most popular majors in 05-06 were unchanged from 00-01. In order, they remained:

business (318,042 degrees, up 21%),
social sciences and history (161,485, up 26%),
education (107,238, up 2%)
healthcare (91,973, up 21%).

Here are the trends over those years for other majors with at least 10,000 graduates.

Parks, recreation, leisure, fitness – up 42%
Security, protective services — up 41%
Philosophy, religion — up 37%
Visual and performing arts — up 36%
Mathematics, statistics — up 32%
Communications, journalism — up 27%

The nottest

Agriculture — down 1%
Education – up 2%
Computer, information studies — up 8%
English, literature –up 9%
